Prof. Darbhe Jayarama (D. J.) Bhat is a globally distinguished mycologist and Principal Research Advisor at VGEI, bringing over four decades of academic and research experience across India, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, China and the UK.

Holding a D.Sc. in Botany (Mycology) from the University of Madras, he is a recognized authority on microfungi, fungal taxonomy, biodiversity and plant pathology.

His landmark research on the fungal diversity of the Western Ghats, spanning over 200 published papers, 5 books, and 15 guided Ph.D. scholars, provides the foundational scientific groundwork for fungal-based bio-inputs, bio-fertilizers and soil restoration frameworks.

A recipient of the Royal Society (London) Fellowship and the Lifetime Achievement Award in Mycology (2020), Prof. D. J. Bhat has also served as President of the Mycological Society of India.

At VGEI, he steers overall scientific methodology, guiding high-integrity mycology research, bio-fertilizer development and biodiversity research frameworks to support sustainable agriculture and environmental restoration.
